The Magdeburg Messenger (1632 Fiction)

This issue’s cover is for “Unintended Consequences.” It’s barely longer than flash fiction, and George Grant has written a profound in-universe look at what the Ring of Fire means. It’s also first because “Unintended Consequences” is a fair description of all the stories in this issue.

“Bremen Or Bust” was first printed in Terry Howard’s The Legend Of Jimmy Dick. We are republishing it because it’s a good story in its own right, and it sets up an upcoming storyline.

Marc Tyrrell’s “Family Matters” shows that although the Ring of Fire didn’t magically make family issues go away, it did provide new—or old—ways of dealing with them.

Sometimes what seems like a quiet shift of guard duty changes lives. Find out how in Garrett W. Vance’s “The Rice Farmer’s Daughter And The Samurai.”

“Rose-Hip And Red Velvet” by Tim Sayeau is the sequel to “A Guest At The New Year” in Issue 6. Sir William and Dame Dorothy reply to Adina’s letter.

Joseph (Jody) Dorsett

Jody Dorsett passed away in July. He was known as Quilly Mammoth on Baen’s Bar. He was a Lutheran pastor. When large numbers of Pokémon players came to the church property, Jody’s solution was to put out bottles of water and church flyers for them.

He wrote “The Three R’s” in the first Ring of Fire anthology. That one story introduced the Hussites/Unitas Fratrum/Bohemian Brethren and Jan Comenius. This helped set up Eric Flint’s short novel “The Wallenstein Gambit.” It’s had far-reaching consequences since then, ranging from Comenius’ attendance at the Besançon Colloquy to the Bohemian Brethren’s presence in 1637: The Transylvanian Decision.

I met Jody in person once, outside the overflow hotel for Libertycon in 2015. He’d just parked his motorcycle. Jody wanted to send one of the Bohemian Brethren to North America and said he knew just the rest area welcome center for a Grantviller to have picked up a pamphlet with a Cherokee syllabary.

Jody is survived by his son, Tripp.

State Library Papers (Non-Fiction)

One piece of up-time technology has appeared here and there in stories. In “X-Rays,” Iver P. Cooper explains how they work and what might be available in the new timeline.
