Preface

In Fall 2021, Eric Flint and the staff of Ring of Fire Press decided to publish a Christmas anthology set in the 1632 universe. From the call for stories to publication was less than ninety days. Even with all their regular responsibilities (and day jobs!), the authors and editors managed it.

A 1632 Christmas contained 21 stories. To get them back in print, Eric Flint’s 1632 & Beyond is issuing two bonus issues. The first contains nine of the stories, and the second contains eleven. The remaining story, David Carrico’s “Canticle de Noel,” will be included in the Baen reprint of 1635: Music & Murder so that all the Marla & Franz stories are in one collection.

Happy reading!

Introduction

When the up-timers arrived in the Germanies in 1631, they had to sort out many different issues. Some were economic. Some were political. Some were military. But above all, the up-timers and down-timers had to deal with the very real culture clash between the culture and mores of 2000 and those of 1632.

Nowhere was the difference line so clear than in the ways Christmas was celebrated. They differed on the date that Santa Claus came, the identities of Santa’s helpers, and even on whether Christmas should be celebrated at all.

In these stories, we see many different viewpoints as Christmas and the other holidays are celebrated across the New Time Line world. We have a Swedish Christmas in the Wonderland Isles, complete with dodos. We have a Swedish Christmas at home. We have a Japanese Christmas in what would have been California, and a Dutch Christmas in the new world. We have a young Jewish boy who has to learn about up-time Hanukkah traditions not yet created for the Jewish holiday. The Lapps find out that Santa is one of them, and Charles Dickens meets Kermit on a shaky and beat-up videotape. There are more, and we hope you enjoy them all.

This anthology is fondly dedicated to our friends, Rick Boatright, Kevin Evans and Karen Carnahan Evans, who have gone beyond but are never forgotten.
