Introduction

Our first themed issue of Eric Flint’s 1632 & Beyond is about spies. We’ve been generous with that definition. You’ll see spies, undercover agents, con men, and those who have particular skills.

Thank you to Thomas Kidd for this issue’s cover. He illustrates the covers for Baen Books’ 1632 novels (and many others). The image is from his story “The Grantville Gumshoe in The Pre-Enactor Murder.” This is his first story in the 1632 universe.

In Sarah Hays’ story “Driving Force,” a chance meeting between Alyse Ballantine and Astrid Schäubin leads to a meal…and one of those skills. If you’ve read Sarah’s stories and wondered about her character’s name, it’s pronounced “Alice.”

Garrett W. Vance brings a spy story from the Far East, showing how the saga of the Nihonmachi Japanese began—and what they’re doing about it—in “Our Man Hiuchi.”

In “Come Dig My Earth,” Edith Wild reveals just what has been going on around Amalia von Herbert and her friend Maggie. So far, we have seen an injury to Amalia’s brother, the mysterious purchase of a house, and a violent home invasion. They didn’t call just the police.

If you want more of Paolo and Carlo from The Unexpected Sales Reps, then Virginia DeMarce’s story “Here Or There?” is for you. They’re becoming respectable—and what do respectable businessmen need? Wives, of course.

  1. I still don’t see where to download this issue!

I have been a devoted reader of the 1632 storyverse ever since the first book, but I am about to declare ‘bad cess to all of you!” over not being able to either renew my subscription a day early OR download issue #10.

  2. It is now March 1 and I have been able to renew my subscription [though the confirming email has yet to reach me a/o 1016hrs CST].
But I still don’t see where to download Issue #10.
