Eric Flint's 1632 & Beyond: Alternate History Stories

The great thing about the 1632 magazines is how many writers are able to share their stories and visions. The tough part is remembering what happened earlier in a story when you pick up a magazine to read the next anxiously-awaited installment of a much enjoyed story. We hope you are as excited about this new feature as we are!

Note: Only select past volumes of the Grantville Gazette are available to read online. Previous and next links are removed from any volumes of the Gazette that aren’t currently available. Issues of 1632 & Beyond are kept available for premium subscribers, so links to those will remain at the top of the story.

Nihonmachi (ongoing)

Garrett W. Vance

The first part of this was published in a Baen anthology and is not available online, so we are providing a slightly longer summary of that story.

This is essentially a tale of three friends. Retired samurai Nishioka Yoriaki, now a humble boatman selling his wife’s delicious bento lunches up and down the river. Nishioka Momo, a secret Christian who fled from religious persecution in Japan, and is a highly talented chef. Their dear friend Blom Corneliszoon, a big-hearted Dutch merchant and bon vivant who loves Momo’s cooking.

Their story began in Nihonmachi, a Japanese enclave in the Ayutthaya kingdom of what will one day be Thailand, their home until the murderous usurper king drove the loyal samurai who fought for the true royal heirs away and burned their town. Blom rescued Momo, who had fled to the river, then went back to help Yoriaki, who was fighting a losing battle alone against many foes on the shore. Blom’s blunderbuss put an end to that struggle, and he said “We are All God’s Children in the Burning East” as he viewed the fiery destruction of Nihonmachi. He took the Japanese refugees aboard his ship and away to safety in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Five years later Blom has returned for them, but now trouble has also come to the new

    1. As we release the volumes of the Gazette, we are creating the serialized stories for our subscribers. Once we get to volumes 59-77, we will have those in serialized format! But thanks for the suggestion – I’m glad you like the serialized story section.
